Cardiac
arrest is one of the major killers in the UK. Many people think that
CPR restarts the heart, but it does not and defibrillation is now recognised
as the only way to restart a non-beating heart. CPR is a stopgap measure
to keep the tissues oxygenated.
The
Chief Medical Officer of the European Resuscitation Council, recently
stated:-
"It
is time to become a little bit more imaginative. It is time to have
defibrillators in public places, hospital wards, large stadia, police
vehicles, large aircraft and large ships. Let the aphorism for the
nineties be this: if a patient has to be brought to the hospital for
resuscitation, it should be considered as a failure of the system."
