The air
we breathe has 21% oxygen of which we use 5% with each breath, so the
16% we breathe out is more than enough for rescue breaths. However,
during CPR the heart only pumps about 33% of its normal volume of blood,
so the tissues eventually become starved of the oxygen they need to
live.
Therefore,
a resuscitation attempt has a better chance of success if a higher percentage
of oxygen is provided. Oxygen is also useful for conscious patients
who are suffering from shock.
Oxygen
equipment is simple to set up and maintain but there are some precautions
that need to be taken, such as preventing oil contamination, so this
course will teach you basic first aid skills, administration of oxygen
and set up and care of the equipment.
